Description
Ella Fitzgerald, iconic African-American jazz singer, known as First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella, was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport, Virginia. She won Amateur Night at Apollo Theater in Harlem at 17. In 1958, she became the first African-American woman to win a Grammy. She received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1967 and passed away on June 15, 1996, in Beverly Hills, CA.
