Astor Row (AstorRL200)

Description
Astor Row consists of twenty-eight row houses on West 130th Street in Harlem, built between 1880 and 1883 by Charles Buek. John Jacob Astor's land purchase in 1844 led to development by his grandson, William Backhouse Astor, Jr. The three-story brick houses feature setbacks from the street, front and side yards, and wooden porches. Initially rented to Whites, in 1920, ten row houses were leased to Black tenants. Designated a New York City landmark in 1981, Astor Row underwent restoration, becoming a racially integrated architectural landmark in Harlem.
